Literati painter, born in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Matsubayashi studied under Noguchi Yukoku and together with Yamaoka Beika founded the Japanese Literati Painting Association (Nihon Nanshuga-kai). He also participated in establishing the Japanese Literati Painting Academy (Nihon Nangain) and the Hakujukai art association. Together with Komuro Suiun, Matsubayashi counts as one of the two pillars of modern Japanese literati painting. A member of the Japan Art Academy, he was appointed as Imperial Household Artist in 1944 and received the Order of Culture in 1958.
