Wind and Clouds, 1980
The history of calligraphy is full of rich expressions such as “miscellaneous styles,” which describes how all things are revealed in each dot and each stroke. The “flying white style” seen in Kukai's works, in which dots and strokes appear to be shaped like fluttering cloth, is believed to have been written with a wooden spatula. However, this work demonstrates that this writing style can be achieved by carefully selecting ink and paper and using the brush in an inventive way. This work also demonstrates the visceral experience of how the taction (brush feel, writing style) emerges in conjunction with the movements and physiology of the calligrapher’s body, including the internal organs and on a cellular level.
